a warm ankle-length sock, or liner, of duffle worn inside moccasins, mukluks, etc. and usually folded down at the top.

It is difficult to know which specific kind of duffle sock or stocking is being referred to in many contexts, the commonest term nowadays being duffles, which most often refers to ankle-length socks or slippers.
